They are called freeze plugs because when the coolant/anti-freeze freezes it expands in the block. Theoretically, the freeze plug will pop out of the block, preventing a cracked block. I've never seen a block that didn't crack after freeze plugs had popped out. You might be able to pinch off the lower radiator hose to keep the anitfreeze in the radiator, but the easyest way is to drain the system.
